Carnations

Finally.... I got some sunlight and could photograph my paintings from the workshop. These paintings were done from still life setup with carnations. After the demo for the first batch on 20th I realized that there were nine flowers in the painting. I decided to do nine flowers for the second batch on 21st also. I went a little too dramatic with the second one and finally that part did not seem to work. But over all I think both the demos went off well.

I hope you all are keeping safe and painting well. Have a great week ahead.

Flowers

Flowers are very deceptive. You think they are easy to paint until you try. There are so many complex shapes in each flower. When you think of simplifying you dont know where to start. My last attempt of live flower painting was a huge disaster. It was more than a year back. I again tried and this time it is better. I think it was a good exercise and I think ought to do this more often, no matter what the result is.

Floral Experiments

Title - Wild flowers
Size - 11 x 14 inch
Medium - Watercolor on paper

These are two experiments that I did last week. Both have the same composition, but treatment wise they are completely different. The first one is more of wet in wet and glazing etc while the second one is more of dry brush type. The second one looks a bit hazy, but it is not due to any problem in the photo. The photo is fine. Its the dry brush probably that gives it that look.

By the way I just read a art quote which says 'Art does not tolerate reason'. Completely agree.

Baba's beauties

Title - Baba's beauties
Size - 11 x 15 inch
Medium - Watercolor on paper

This is yet another painting of my home back in Bhubaneswar. My father spends a lot of time taking care of those green beauties. Hence the name. The colors are a little bit too chic for my taste, but I thought the purple and yellows were making a good complimentary pair.

Psychedelia

These are two paintings I did while doing another painting while waiting for that to dry. Just quick and loose. I never do good flowers, but I liked these two.

An Experimental weekend

flower study watercolorThis weekend happened to be very experimental in nature. I hardly do flowers (have done it only once before). The complexity of form and colors of flowers scare me. And on Saturday for a change I did some flowers from a live setup with PC. Idea was that of PC. I was not able to simplify what I was seeing and was getting caught up in the details. It took about 3 hours to complete it (with a break of about an hour in between because of power failure) and had a lot to learn from the experience.

ripples watercolorIn the second painting which was done on Friday I wanted to capture the ripples in the pond. After looking at some photographs I kind of got an idea about the characteristics, but could not translate it on to the paper. I think I'll give it a fresh try after some days.

Flowers anyone???

This is the first flower painting I have done in watercolors. This was an exercise for an online group that I am part of. The idea was to paint loose. I tried two versions of the same painting.

looser flowers in watercolor
The second one seems looser than the first one. But I guess I wanted both of them to be even looser in quality. Some day I'll be there.

p.s. Thanks to Roena and Wendy for their valuable inputs
