Winter Light III and IV

Here are the last 2 from my winter light (mini)series. While the last two had a dominant color, these two are mostly about the grays. The second one was a challenge as I was trying to depict the very first light of the day which hits the earth even before sun is visible on the horizon. The light is trying to break out of the haze of the winter morning. Such a difficult light to capture. But I was happy with how it turned out.

Memories from Ramnagar

Two months back I went for a sketching day to Ramnagar (about 60 kms from Bangalore) with two of my sketching buddies. We spent the entire day travelling, sketching and enjoying the beauty of rural India. The divided sheet is one of the things I brought back from Ramnagar. It is fun to paint on a divided sheet.

Later I decided to do a big one for one of them, which is posted here. I am going for a 3 day sketching trip to Mysore, which is a heritage city. I hope to soak myself in the beauty of Mysore and hopefully bring back something worthwhile from there too.

Wish you all a very happy weekend.

Year End Post

Finally 2013 comes to an end. Its been an eventful year of art for me. And before saying bye to 2013 I thought I must share some experience with you, which you may find useful.
"Instead of trying to paint things using watercolor try to paint a watercolor using things".

I see many people trying to paint 'things' using watercolor. The thing may be a landscape, portrait, still life or any representational form or art. I also tend to do the same many times. But what experience has taught me is not to get into this trap of painting 'things' with watercolor. Instead it has taught me to paint a watercolor using the 'thing'. Guess its a little confusing. So let me explain.

Watercolor unlike other mediums has a mind of its own and it does like to do its own things on paper. Watercolor has a lifetime during which it moves freely on paper before drying (dying) and settling down on paper. Since its an alive medium trying to control it fully does not really lead to a fruitful relationship between the artist and the medium. It must be allowed to do its own things on paper. And if it is not allowed to do so then the painting does loose that watercolor charm.

When people try to represent 'thing' using watercolor often they try to control it too much. Because they want the 'thing' on paper to look like the 'thing' in reality. But as soon as one thinks of creating a watercolor, where paint is allowed to do its own things there is a paradigm shift. The 'thing' is being used only as a reference and the artist is only creating a watercolor. Thought process is no more in terms of trees, branches, flowers, hills. It is now in terms of positive and negative shapes, tones, temperature, strokes, dry brush, wet in wet and things like that. Everything falls into place just because there is a change in approach.

Well this is what my experience has taught me. Further experience may teach me that all this is crap. But thats how life and art are. Everyday we are learning and I hope you find these learning useful.

Wish you all a very happy new year with this little snippet from Upanishad.

Muvattupuzah - IV

Its taken a little more time to get to number four. But better late than never. So here is it Muvattupuzah - IV. And I also did a painting sitting on the divider of a road, because I got a good composition from there. This was last Sunday. The subject was difficult. I think I managed it in the end. What do you think about it??

Muvattupuzah - III

Hi there. After the small detour here I am with my Muvattupuzah series. This is the third in the series and I could not really think of a title for this one. All suggestions are always welcome.

Red Berry Walk

After my Chikmagalur series I am taking a break with acrylics. No watercolor for last 7-8 days now. Just having a little fun with acrylics before any more tubes of my acrylic set dries up (4 tubes have already dried up by the way). I find taking such breaks with a different medium very useful and a lot of fun.

I did not start with a very concrete idea for this one. Just kept going with the flow. Changed the foreground and the tree 2-3 times. Finally stopped at the least unsatisfied point. Otherwise I may still have been painting this.

I'll be going with my sketching group for a weekend sketching trip to Nandi hills (about 40 kms from Bangalore) on Sunday. I am really excited about it. Hopefully I'll be able to get one nice work out of the trip. But more on that next week. You guys enjoy your weekend.

Posing

Hi there.. This is the fourth painting of my Chikmagalur series. When I started I thought this was going to be a rather simple painting. Very easy. Yes thats what I thought. And I started complicating it. I was in no time brought back to my senses by this medium called watercolor.

Beauty of this medium is that nothing is easy, but everything can me made simple. :)

In my last painting I liked the central part and thought that only that could have also made a painting. So I made another painting, but changed the mood.

Have you done something like this before? Same painting or part of a painting painted differently. The hangover of the first painting was so strong that I just can not appreciate the new one. How have you felt?

A warm beginning

After the last rainy painting, I thought you may need some sun. :)
This is done from a sketch I had done sometime back for Morning Mood, Bangalore series. Somehow I had forgotten about it. When I saw it recently I had to paint it.

Wishing you all a great weekend.

Morning Dew

90% of the painting was done in a single wash and I loved that. The rest 10% really did not add anything to the final product. I wish I had taken a picture of the first wash.
Anyways can you feel the dew!!!!!!

On the run

Hi there. The fourth of the series now. After I finished this it reminded me of a number by Pink Floyd called 'On the run'. So I named it the same.

Coming to some news from my side. I have been carrying an acute eye infection since last ten days. Its been very bad and I have not painted during this time. That also means no computers and I have been missing out on all your blogs for a while now. The infection is healing slowly and doctor says it will take minimum ten days more to be okay. I wish such an eye problem never happens to any of you out there. Anyway I'll sign off now and be back soon with better eyes.

Do take care of yourselves.

Morning mood - III

The next of the series now. Very similar composition as the other two. But still it was very interesting to do the composition. Especially that of the left side of the painting. And of course the execution was tricky too.

Using human figures in foreground of a street painting is always a little adventerous. And I wanted to be adventerous :). The human figures had to be detailed enough to suggest some activity and contribute to the mood. And it had to be subtle enough so that light remains the hero of this painting. Hence the dark tree, human figures and the shadow area had to be kept as one big shape; To enhance the feeling of light in the center of the painting, while letting me have my thrill.

All said and done I think I am doing similar compositions right now. Need to break this I guess. Till then good morning, good afternoon, good evening and good night. :)

Morning Mood - II

Here is the second of the series. Compared to last one this one is a little later in the morning, when the mist is gone. But still I chose to make it much cooler than the last one. Just one of the whims. :) I hope you enjoy this one too.

Morning Mood

I have not posted in last 12 days, and it seems like ages. Its not that I have not been painting, its just that I did not have much to upload. I have been mostly doing studies, sketches etc of early morning scenes (early because it is before I wake up. :)). Two weeks back I had manged to wake up early enough to go around and get some pictures. I have been trying to get that mood onto paper. I am planning to do such scenes for sometime. So automatically it can be called a series and this is the first of the series.

Have a fabulous weekend friends.

Outdoors and Indoors

Outdoor painting is very exciting to start with. But it is also a great dampener by the time I finish the painting. I generally get caught up with all the details and end up describing the scene, rather than capturing the mood of the place in my outdoor paintings. And sometimes though I start well I get carried away towards the end and spoil a painting just in the last 5 minutes or so. But it is a great study for painting the same scene back in the studio and also a great learning experience. But on the flip side the studio painting may lack the spontaneity of the plain air one. Here I am sharing some such examples. Hope you enjoy it.

At Barabati Fort

Barabati fort at Cuttack in Orissa is one of the last standing forts. I tried to capture a winter morning scene there. It was done from a photo. But at the end of it I was not very happy with it. It looked to me as if something was missing.

What is your first impression when you see it? What is that you find that is just not right? Well, I am not going to do anything to this painting, but I would like to find some answers to the questions in my mind.
