Year End Post

Finally 2013 comes to an end. Its been an eventful year of art for me. And before saying bye to 2013 I thought I must share some experience with you, which you may find useful.
"Instead of trying to paint things using watercolor try to paint a watercolor using things".

I see many people trying to paint 'things' using watercolor. The thing may be a landscape, portrait, still life or any representational form or art. I also tend to do the same many times. But what experience has taught me is not to get into this trap of painting 'things' with watercolor. Instead it has taught me to paint a watercolor using the 'thing'. Guess its a little confusing. So let me explain.

Watercolor unlike other mediums has a mind of its own and it does like to do its own things on paper. Watercolor has a lifetime during which it moves freely on paper before drying (dying) and settling down on paper. Since its an alive medium trying to control it fully does not really lead to a fruitful relationship between the artist and the medium. It must be allowed to do its own things on paper. And if it is not allowed to do so then the painting does loose that watercolor charm.

When people try to represent 'thing' using watercolor often they try to control it too much. Because they want the 'thing' on paper to look like the 'thing' in reality. But as soon as one thinks of creating a watercolor, where paint is allowed to do its own things there is a paradigm shift. The 'thing' is being used only as a reference and the artist is only creating a watercolor. Thought process is no more in terms of trees, branches, flowers, hills. It is now in terms of positive and negative shapes, tones, temperature, strokes, dry brush, wet in wet and things like that. Everything falls into place just because there is a change in approach.

Well this is what my experience has taught me. Further experience may teach me that all this is crap. But thats how life and art are. Everyday we are learning and I hope you find these learning useful.

Wish you all a very happy new year with this little snippet from Upanishad.

Coonoor

Hi. Its been some time since I have posted a new work here. I have been a little busy (Could not have come up with any worse excuse than that). And mostly I have been lazy (Now I am telling the truth). :)

I have not been painting well enough recently, which also means that I am stuck in a plateau and if I just keep at it then at the end of this phase I would have a taken a step higher (That is real positive thinking I guess). A couple of decent enough works still have come out in this phase which I thought were okay to post. I hope you like them.

To all my friends across the globe, A Very Happy Christmas. Ho Ho..... :)

Thank You

'Bengaluru on Location' finally closed last Tuesday (26th Nov 2013) after 4 days of  show at Chitrakala Parishath. The response this time was really overwhelming. So first of all I want to thank each and every one who helped in making this such a success.

Here are some pics and a short report on the show.

The opening was a big party. It was opened by my sketching club Pencil Jammers. Though everybody had to go through the torture of my nervous speech, I feel they enjoyed the show and the food.

Media was very kind to me in their coverage and reviews. Three top English dailies, namely New Indian Express, The Hindu and Deccan Chronicle and one local daily (Ee Nadu) covered the show and gave good reviews.

Those who missed the show can take a  virtual tour of the show below.

The show was well attended on all four days by people from all walks of life. Everybody seemed to enjoy the show. Many people came back with their families to see the show for the second time. Many artists came back with other artists to see the show again. For some people it was like seeing a dreamy Bangalore in a gallery.

I'll leave you with some comments from the visitor's book and a few more pics.

"Brilliant Work Prabal. This is the first time I am seeing all your finished watercolors together, and I am really overwhelmed. Love the play of lights and shadows and the beautiful concepts. Keep it up and hope to see more..."

"Beautiful. Excellent watch, each and every one."

"By attending this exhibition my interest towards art has certainly increased. Thank you."

"Excellent impressionist style of watercolors. Loved it."

"Splendid collection of a dreamy Bangalore."

"Beautiful art works with a great sense of perspective and color. "

Muvattupuzah - VI

I did this just before I started my prep for the exhibition. And since then I have not been able to get time even to post this. Yes. I have been busy. :)

A solo exhibition is really demanding. Fortunately I am quiet good on the plan right now. Nothing has got delayed till now and I hope it stays that way. Just got stuck with the invitations a little. There was no printer guy who was ready to print the envelopes of the invites for me for a reasonable price. The envelop was actually going to cost more than two times the invitation cards. And others were not ready to print on envelopes.

So I decided that I would do all the envelopes manually using my brush and paints. And it really did not take that long really. And moreover I enjoyed doing these.

Solo Show

Hi there. I have not been able to keep track of all the exciting things that has been going on in the blogoshpere (Guess that what they call this space :)) for the past ten odd days. The reason of my absence being a small vacation that I had taken on account of Deepavali festival. Now that I am back, suddenly it seems to me that I am running out of time for my next solo show which is scheduled to open on 23rd of this month.

I have created a page for the show. Please click here to view the page. I have also (painstakingly) made a promo video for the show. Please have a look at it by clicking here. I hope you all like the video.

I'll keep updating you about the preparations. Hopefully I'll be able to do and post some paintings also in the meanwhile.

Till then take care and paint well.

Muvattupuzah - V

Here is the fifth in the Muvattupuzah series. The quality of light in this was something that I would call as damp light. A feeling of wetness and an ambient light when the sun has gone behind the clouds. And the foreground lacking light almost completely.

I feel I could have done better. But still I am happy with this one.

Muvattupuzah - IV

Its taken a little more time to get to number four. But better late than never. So here is it Muvattupuzah - IV. And I also did a painting sitting on the divider of a road, because I got a good composition from there. This was last Sunday. The subject was difficult. I think I managed it in the end. What do you think about it??

Post cards from Coonoor

I know I was supposed to post Muvattupuzah - III in this post. But after returning from a beautiful and serene place like Coonoor I had to post a few sketches I did there. Actually the wikipedia link here really does not do justice in telling you how beautiful a place Coonoor is.

I was there in Coonoor to attend a friend's wedding and meet old friends. I really had a whale of time there. And in between all that I managed a few WC sketches. Hope you enjoy these. Muattupuzah - III will have to wait till the next post. :)

Muvattupuzah - II

Here is the second painting of my Muvattupuzah series. Its the painting of the same place as in the first painting, but from a different angle. In the last painting I had blown up the house a little bit to show off the tiled roof, but in this I have scaled it down a little bit to make the figures noticeable. Artistic license you see. :)

Hope you enjoy this one. I am off to my next one in the series. Have a great week.

Muvattupuzah - I

My next series is going to be on this quaint place in Kerala called Muvattupuzah. Its a small hilly town with 5 rivers (though I got to see only one), lots of vegetation and beautiful people. I was smitten by this place. So series on Hampi will have to wait. :)

And if you get a chance just go to Hampi and spend a few days there. be sure to stay on the other side of the river Tungabhadra. I am sure you'll love the Hampi experience.

Mixed Feelings

This painting is 'inspired' from Trinity circle, Bangalore. I say inspired because I have changed the shape of the church, I have changed the archway at the entrance into two pillars. And I have removed all the trees that cover most part of the church. I first did a painting which was close to the original place. But I really did not like it and changed it to something very different. So I say inspired. :)

In Bangalore the weather is some what like English weather for half the year. It can rain anytime and then in no time you can have clear skies. I have tried to capture that transient time here. There are two different moods in the painting. One in the background and one in the foreground. Thats why I call it mixed feelings. :)

Anyway I hope all of you are keeping well and have a great weekend.

In the memory of...

Bangalore is the home to National military memorial. And as soon as you enter the gate there is magnificent sculpture dedicated to the soldiers, who have laid down their lives in different wars in the history of India. Not only the sculpture is magnificent, the subject itself is so emotional, that while painting it I was quiet skeptical. But anyhow I managed to complete it.

I am doing quiet a bit of sketching this weekend. Hopefully you all are having a great sketchy/painty/arty weekend too. :)

Sketchbook again

I thought of sharing some more sketches with you from my sketchbook. All these sketches are done either sitting in cafes, parks or even standing on the roadside.

To be honest I never really liked sketching so much. I used to do it as a mandatory thing to really improve on my painting. But I must confess that gradually I have started enjoying it quiet a bit. Hopefully you enjoy these sketches too. :)

Sketchbook time

Hi there. Its been long since I posted anything from my sketchbook. I know many of you out there love to get a peek into other artist's sketchbooks. I too always look forward to it.

These two sketches were done yesterday (15th August, Independence day of India) at a coffee shop. While I was sketching the gentleman below he realized in quick time that he was being sketched and exclaimed to me 'Oh looks like I am being sketched'! I dont know why but for a moment I felt like a thief who has been caught red handed by the police. But being a nice person he was he gave a nod for me to continue. Other sketches were just gesture studies of people who did not realize they were being sketched. :)

While I was just cleaning up my book shelf I found this abstract doodle I had done about 12-13 years back. Completely meaning less doodle, but thought it would be an interesting post.

Have a happy weekend everyone.

Loco

Three weeks back I had gone to sketch in Military memorial with my sketching group. I did not get much time there as I had other plans for the day. However I made some study sketches of this old train engine that was kept on display. Back in studio I did this small painting.

I really dont do much of such paintings whereby I am painting an object or in other words still life (Though this is huge I guess it still qualifies to be a still life in natural setup :)). So its always challenging for me. Compared to landscapes where the mood is what I am striving for, here I am unclear about what is that I must strive for. Is it the light, the textures, the details... I really dont know. So I just go with the flow. And sometimes because of that the final output comes out completely unexpected.

What do you do when you are unclear. I would like to hear from you.

Have a great week ahead.

Carnations

Finally.... I got some sunlight and could photograph my paintings from the workshop. These paintings were done from still life setup with carnations. After the demo for the first batch on 20th I realized that there were nine flowers in the painting. I decided to do nine flowers for the second batch on 21st also. I went a little too dramatic with the second one and finally that part did not seem to work. But over all I think both the demos went off well.

I hope you all are keeping safe and painting well. Have a great week ahead.

Workshop news

I had an extremely exciting weekend teaching workshop on watercolors to twenty very enthusiastic and very talented individuals. As it was an introductory workshop on watercolors the focus was on basic techniques and their application in a painting. The final painting of the workshop was done from a still life setup of carnations (lots of negative painting :)). Some amazing works came out from the students and I was very pleased with them. Here are some pictures from the workshop. I have not yet taken pics of the demo I did. I'll post them in next post. But as of now enjoy the works done by the students. Have a great day.
